Fresh fixtures offer up enticing duels.
The fixtures for the 2015 Varsity Cup have been released amid much fanfare and excitement from the South African rugby community.
The new season once again promises much in terms of excitement-filled student rugby fuelled by youthful flair and an attacking approach.
The round of fixtures which commence on the 9th of February dishes up a tantalizing match-up between Ikeys and Pukke – the finalists last year – on the Fanie du Toit Sports Grounds in Potchefstroom.
Ikeys snatched victory from the jaws of defeat on the same field in the final last season with a last gasp, injury time converted try that came after a drop kick charge down on the stroke of full time. The Ikeys counter attack and try that followed will long live on in Varsity Cup folklore as one of the tournament’s enduring moments – the comeback of all comebacks.
Ikeys and Maties will be at each other’s throats once again in the opening round of fixtures in 2015. The game, to be played at the UCT rugby fields, will feature Ikeys in their capacity as defending champions, and Maties as the most decorated team in the history of the Varsity Cup. The other opening fixture on the same evening will see last season’s semi-finalists NMMU Madibaz and the NWU-Pukke match strengths at the Fanie du Toit Sports Grounds in Potchefstroom. Lastly, newly promoted Central University of Technology (who replaced Wits in the Varsity Cup) will host UJ in Bloemfontein for their very first Varsity Cup match. UJ will be on the offensive display as they have no interest in returning to the relegation quagmire they were involved in last year.
If last year’s heart-stopping moments are anything to go by, the 2015 edition of the Varsity Cup will once again provide more than its share of legendary moments.

About Varsity Cup
The Varsity Cup presented by Steinhoff International is in its seventh year after a highly successful inaugural competition in 2008. It is already a highlight on the rugby-mad South African’s sporting calendar. This inter-university rugby competition sees eight of the country’s top universities go head-to-head to take home the title (and a substantial cash reward). The eight teams play in a single round, followed by a semi-final and a final that determines the National University Champion. Varsity Cup is managed by an executive committee chaired by current SARU CEO Jurie Roux.
