Sarah Poewe is an Olympic breast stroke swimmer who has competed internationally for both South Africa and Germany. At the age of 14, she made her international debut at the 1997 Pan Pacific Championships. In 1998, Sarah was the voted the Best Female Swimmer at the Junior Olympics in Moscow.
When she was 17, Sarah competed for the South African swimming team in three events at the 2000 Olympic Games (Sydney), and finished in fourth place in the women’s 100 m breaststroke.
Sarah went on to represent Germany in the 2004 Olympics (Athens), where she was part of the team that won the bronze medal in the women’s 100 m medley. She also represented Germany at the 2008 (Beijing) and 2012 Summer Olympics (London). We spoke to Sarah about switching countries, missing South Africa, the importance of selecting the right coach and agent, studying in America, and challenges female swimmers face once retiring.
